I am in no way an expert at the guided reading process. I am a novice like many of you. However, I wanted to set up a site that would allow those of us just beginning to implement guided reading in our classrooms to be able to walk through the process in a very sequential manner from preparation to implementation. Reading 101: A Guide to Teaching Reading and Writing Reading 101 is a self-paced professional development course for K-3 teachers, developed by Reading Rockets. The program provides teachers with an in-depth knowledge of reading and writing so they are prepared to guide their students into becoming skilled and enthusiastic readers and writers.

Journal Entry Component #1: Types of Reading Material

To Do

1. Select an option from the reading anthology available in this course. Pick anything that initially sounds interesting to you. Don't read it yet!
2. Begin Reading Journal Entry for that source.
3. In a word processing program, start a file that you can return to repeatedly throughout this module. Title it Reading Journal: 'Name of Reading Selection.' (For example, Reading Journal: 'Multiple Intelligences')
4. Identify the type of reading that this source illustrates.
5. Write a short paragraph explaining how you made that identification of type.

Worked Example

This video demonstrates how to complete this step of the Reading Journal assignment. Note that you aren't reading the piece yet–just scanning and getting a feel for what it contains overall.

This reading selection is from a textbook.

I know this because its primary purpose seems to be to educate me. It is fact-based, uses research, and includes a table that I can refer to later to quickly remind myself about the different types of intelligences. The author of this writing seems to want to teach me about multiple intelligences, and doesn't seem to expect that I know a lot about this topic already. Awesome dessert ideas.

These 9 course modules include in-depth information, classroom strategies, assignments, and additional resources on the building blocks of teaching reading and writing — including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. In the accompanying video clips, you'll hear from literacy experts and see teachers using effective strategies and techniques in the classroom.

Reading Rockets does not offer CEUs for this self-study course. After completing the modules, you can download a Letter of Completion.

Reading 101 provides excellent preparation for becoming a Certified Literacy Teacher. You can attain certification through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction and The International Dyslexia Association. The first step is successful completion of the Certification Exam for Educators of Reading Instruction (CEERI).
